It is our aim that pupils develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and will be given opportunities to access a broad range of activities. They should develop their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils are taught:

  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as

    developing balance, agility and co-ordination.
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Pupils in Year 1 receive two 30 minute lessons a week and this is then increased in Year 2, with pupils receiving one 30 minute PE lesson and two 30 minute Games lessons.

We are proud of our swimming provision which begins in Year 2 and takes place at Spelthorne Leisure Centre.

As an introduction to swimming, Year 2 pupils have a term of weekly lessons where the focus is on water confidence, with the development of strokes where appropriate.

In Year 2 Games lessons, pupils work in single sex classes and are introduced to football, touch rugby and cricket for the boys whilst the girls work on netball, hockey and rounders. It is here that the fundamentals of Sport specific skills begin to be taught, with the focus being on attacking and defending.
