Pupils build on their natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about their world. They work individually but begin to play with other pupils in pairs and small groups. By watching, listening and experimenting, they develop their skills in movement, coordination, control and communication and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations. Pupils also understand the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices.

As part of the EYFS Physical Development programme pupils should:

  • Move with confidence, imagination and safety.
  • Move with control and coordination.
  • Travel around, under, over and through balancing and climbing equipment.
  • Show and awareness of space, in terms of themselves and others.
  • Recognise the importance of healthy living.
  • Recognise the changes that happen to their bodies as a result of physical activity.
  • Use a range of small and large equipment.
  • Improve communication skills by working with different partners.
